Does Statsig support automated event name creation and management for tracking, including API integration and code generation for Android and iOS?

Date of slack thread: 6/18/24

Anonymous: Hi Statsig, I’m looking to automate event name creation and management for our tracking. Specifically, I need to:

  1. Create and manage event names on a dashboard.
  2. Fetch these event names via an API, and automatically generate utility files for Android (Kotlin) and iOS (Swift). Does Statsig support this workflow? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

Vijaye (Statsig): Could you give an example of what you’re trying to do?

Anonymous: Current Workflow (Manual):

  1. Event name: We define tracking events (e.g., “button_clicked”, “purchase_completed”) in a Google Sheet (source of truth for all client platforms), including their names, descriptions, and relevant metadata.
  2. Code Generation: Our developers manually create Kotlin (Android) and Swift (iOS) utility files containing constants or enums representing these event names. These files are then used in our mobile apps to log events to Statsig. Desired Workflow (Automated):
  3. Dashboard: We’d like to use a dashboard (ideally within Statsig, or potentially a third-party tool) to create and manage event definitions. This would make it easier for non-technical team members to collaborate on event creation.
  4. API Integration / Code gen: Clients can fetch the defined event names via an API (or script). This would allow us to: ◦ Automatically generate the Kotlin and Swift utility files whenever events are added or updated in the dashboard. ◦ Potentially integrate with Statsig directly to create these events on your platform as well.

Vijaye (Statsig): It’s an interesting use case - something we haven’t built support for natively.

We’ll discuss this internally.
